CHAPTER 1: DESCRIBING MOTION & FUNDAMENTALS 1. Concept of Rest • An object is said to be at rest if it does not change its position with respect to time and its immediate surroundings. • Real-Life Example: A heavy wooden table sitting on a classroom floor remains at rest unless an external pull is applied. • Explicit Formula/State: Velocity \(v = 0\), Acceleration \(a = 0\). 2. Concept of Motion • An object is in motion if it continuously changes its position relative to a fixed frame of reference over time. • Real-Life Example: A bird flying across the sky or a car driving past trees along the highway. • Explicit Formula/State: Position coordinates change continuously with time (\(x(t) eq ext{constant}\)). 3. Uniform Motion • When a body covers equal distances in equal intervals of time, no matter how small these time intervals may be. • Real-Life Example: A spacecraft moving through vacuum space with a constant cruise control speed of 800 km/h. • Key Feature: The path is a perfectly straight line on a distance-time graph, indicating zero acceleration. 4. Non-Uniform Motion • When a body covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time, resulting in varying speeds. • Real-Life Example: A bus driving through dense city traffic, constantly braking and accelerating at every turn. • Key Feature: The graph shows a curved path line, representing either acceleration or deceleration. [ /n Pencil Diagram Layout: Motion Comparison] • Uniform: Straight diagonal slope arrow going up smoothly. • Non-Uniform: Curved zig-zag line bending upwards exponentially. -n Class 9th Physics - Premium Topper Notes Page 3 of 13
