HISTORY • Wires carrying current in a magnetic field experiences a force perpendicular to both the current and magnetic field . This underlying mechanism was observed by Ampere in the 1820 s . However it was not until a solid mathematical basis for electromagnetism was systematized by Maxwell "On Physical Lines of Force" that details the interaction between magnetic field and electric current . • Edwin Hall then explored, whether magnetic field interacts with the conductors, and reasoned that if the force was specifically acting on the current, it should crowd the carriers to one side of the conductor, producing a small measurable voltage . In 1879 , he discovered HALL EFFECT while working on his doctoral degree at Hopkins University eighteen years before the electron was discovered . EDWIN HALL (1855 - 1938)
