Nursing Essentials: NCLEX-RN 5-Week Preparation Plan Based on the April 2026 NCLEX-RN Test Plan Introduction to the NCLEX-RN Examination The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) is the licensing examination required for graduates of registered nursing programs to become licensed nurses. The examination is developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and is designed to determine whether a graduate nurse possesses the knowledge, clinical judgment, and decision-making ability required to practice safely as an entry-level registered nurse. The NCLEX does not test memorization alone. Instead, it evaluates the nurse’s ability to apply nursing knowledge in clinical situations involving patient safety, prioritization, and clinical judgment. The NCLEX uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) . Each question answered determines the difficulty of the next question. The exam stops when the computer determines with 95% certainty that the candidate’s ability is either above or below the passing standard. Important NCLEX testing facts: Minimum questions: 85 Maximum questions: 150 Maximum testing time: 5 hours The number of questions a candidate receives does not indicate whether they passed or failed . NCLEX Client Needs Framework The NCLEX examination is organized using a Client Needs framework . These categories represent the responsibilities of an entry-level registered nurse caring for patients in multiple healthcare settings. All NCLEX questions fall into one of the following categories.
